A GitHub Enterprise Server migration across hundreds of repositories

Moved a datacenter-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server environment to AWS while preserving delivery workflows across hundreds of repositories.

The problem

An enterprise GitHub environment ran in a datacenter and supported hundreds of repositories. The platform needed to move to AWS without forcing development teams to rebuild their delivery workflows around a new operating model.

This combination of infrastructure, governance, and operational ownership is one focus of our GitHub Enterprise consulting work.

How we worked

  1. Assess. We mapped the GitHub Enterprise Server environment, repository population, infrastructure dependencies, and the developer workflows that the migration had to preserve.

  2. Codify. We used Terraform, Ansible, and PowerShell to make the target AWS environment and repeatable platform tasks visible in code.

  3. Operationalize. We planned the move across the repository population and kept the platform work connected to the delivery workflows that teams used each day.

  4. Enable. We documented the platform tasks and operating knowledge needed after the move, so the client team could maintain the environment.

The outcome

The GitHub Enterprise Server environment moved from the datacenter to AWS across hundreds of repositories. Developer delivery workflows remained in place through the migration.
